Herbs are so much fun to grow. I have some great planting tips for your indoor herb garden.
It is so easy grow kitchen herb garden. Believe me, if I can do it I know you can do it too.
It is so much fun selecting cute pots to plant the herbs in. The ideas are endless. I love looking at my indoor garden while I wash dishes. It is fun to watch the herbs grow. Their fragrant leaves and little flowers are some of the best (and cheap) aromatherapy!
How To Plant An Indoor Herb Garden
Provide light. Herbs need at least 4 to 6 hours of natural sunlight a day. Windows facing south and southwest are perfect locations.
Plant in the right pot. While clay pots are great, they have a tendency to dry out. Living in a dry climate, plastic or glazed flower pots work better for me. However, I have chamomile and basil growing in clay pots. Which ever pot you decide to use make sure it has good drainage.
Plant in fresh potting soil. I have been guilty of reusing potting soil. Old soil can contain bugs and even fungus. My favorite gardening soil is Miracle Grow. I have had great luck with it.
Provide water. Let herbs dry out completely before watering. Just because the soil looks dry on top does not mean it is dry on the bottom. I poke my finger down to at least my first finger joint.
Herb Gardening Supplies & Tools
As my husband says if you are going to do the job right, you need the right tools. Instead of grabbing a fork and spoon from the kitchen (yes, I am guilty!) to plant with, these ergonomic hand tools make planting the herbs a breeze.
There are so many flower pots out there to choose from. Some of my favorite include:
Mini terracotta pots are so cute and versatile. I spray painted the body of mine with chalkboard paint and wrote the herb name on each pot.
Plastic flower pots will often come with their own saucer attached. Love the fun colors!
Ceramic flower pots have their own saucer attached.
Water resistant gardening gloves help to protect your hands while planting.
Give delicate seedlings and plants a drink with a watering can. Love the polka dots!
Instructions. Check. Supplies. Check. Now that you know how to plant your kitchen herb garden you just need one last thing. Plants!!!
